Yoga for Your Moon Time (Video)

When I was teaching a women’s yoga workshop in China a couple of years ago I learned that it’s not uncommon for women there to get the first few days of their menstrual cycles off from work. Lucky ladies! Since then I’ve started my own personal revolution by taking a “wellness day” on the first day of my cycle to rest.

I think that every woman deserves the same. Our menses are a time for rejuvenation and tapping into our inner wisdom. It’s not a time to be exercising vigorously, cooking for our families, or buzzing around town doing errands. We need to use these days to stay home and slow down; for a major ingredient in women’s happiness is making sure we’re well rested. When our batteries hit “low” we’re of no use to ourselves, much less to others.

Here’s a mini yoga practice that any woman can do during her moon time. I’ve chosen the two essential postures that will help you to rest and ensure a healthy menstrual flow. They’re practical–meaning you can do them at work during your lunch break, when your children are napping, or on your bed before you go to sleep at night. No previous yoga experience is required!

    Thank you, Sara. I also think it would make for a great practice after a long day ( I have a very physical job) when you can’t muster the energy for a full practice. Intersesting to hear they take the first days of their menses off in China. I read that in India they rest for the first three days. I think I need to move to Asia!

    This is so wonderful, Sara! In our culture, the idea of the moon cycle as a sacred time – a time for rest and reflection – is completely unknown to most of us. I’m so extremely grateful that you’re teaching us how to properly take care of ourselves and honor our bodies during this time rather than dismiss and hurt them. I used to be one of those women who would just try and defy my cycle with tampons, coffee, and loads of advil to relieve my pain. Thanks to you, I now approach it very differently and allow myself the rest that I need and deserve. Looking forward to trying these poses! (You look so joyful doing them :)

    Olá Sara,
    I loved learning that these poses are great for menstration as I used them often with pregnant and post-partum moms! For pregnancy we use more support and women also enjoy these poses adapted to an exercise ball. Reclining Butterfly Pose feels wonderful for opening up the pelvis and relieving lower back pain.
